Moving on From SNG Poker Tournaments

Moving on From SNG Poker Tournaments
SNG tournaments, and in particular the 1-table games, are a great way to build experience in poker games at the same time as growing your bankroll. However, there comes a point where most players decide that they have played enough of the same 1-table games and are ready to move on to new challenges. This article outlines the main options available in this situation and briefly covers the pros and cons of each one.
#1 - Multi-Table Sit N Goes
The Sit And Go poker format comes in many sizes and varieties. 2-table games, 5-tables (45 Players) and the 90 Player Knockout SNGs are all popular choices. For players at the lowest level I would recommend that the 45 player games are a great step towards the profitable world of multi-table tournament play.
#2 - 180 Player Sit N Go Tournaments
These games are available at both Pokerstars and Full Tilt and come in turbo / non-turbo formats with a choice of buy-in levels. Playing more like a tournament than a SNG, 18 players are paid in each game. 180 Player Sit N Goes are a great choice for players who enjoy tournament poker, but do not have the time to commit to the larger events which can easily take 5+ hours.
#3 - Multi-Table Tournaments
Tournaments are a profitable form of poker, though do feature big swings of fortune while you wait for all the small losses to be balanced by a big final table score. While tournaments are considered a more profitable bet in the long-term compared to SNGs, you will need to be able to commit enough time to complete long sessions - and have a strong enough mental approach to poker to cope with those times you play great for hours, only to suffer a bad beat.
#4 - Cash Games
When it comes to potential for a large income, cash games are where it is at. Players used to SNGs often find they need to focus on the post-flop aspect of their game, with the skills that were good enough in the SNG format not being enough to cut it against cash game grinders. Some of the biggest winners in online poker are not the well known online tournament pros - they are mid-stakes cash game grinders with solid hand reading skills.
#5 - Other Poker Variations
If you feel like your game is getting stale, then why not shift to a different form of poker such as Pot-Limit Omaha, Stud or Draw. Switching games can keep you fresh and demonstrate that a solid understanding of poker fundamentals can easily transfer to different games.
